Budesonide/formoterol equal to albuterol for treatment of mild to moderate asthma episodes

Summary
This was a randomized open-label study conducted over several months to compare budesonide/formoterol with inhaled albuterol in the treatment of acute exacerbations of asthma that were mild to moderate in severity. The study was conducted in an emergency department. Parameters measured were oxygen saturation, peak expiratory flow rate, respiratory rate, and subjective improvement measures.

Thirty-two patients were enrolled, and 17 were randomized to receive nebulized albuterol and 15 to receive budesonide/formoterol. All patients improved and there was no statistically significant difference between the two treatments.
